The Class of 2010 would like to dedicate the yearbook to our extraordinary class advisors. Ms. Bridget Reed and Mr. Robert Rozzi have worked around the clock planning our proms, dances, fundraisers, and other class events. They have helped to optimize our high school experience. Their willingness to help students in any way has made high school so much better.

Always there to listen or laugh, Reed and Rozzi show a true interest in the students. These incredible teachers are irreplaceable, and we admire them for their time and dedication to the Class of 2010.

Dr. Kim Smith was appointed principal and Ms. Jane Farrar was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal. Mr. Dennis O'Leary was on hand to congratulate both on their new roles at W.H.S.

Exchange students from Switzerland attended W.H.S. during the opening weeks of school. In the spring W.H.S. students traveled to Basel, Switzerland as part of an exchange program

For the first time, W.H.S. students were able to take online courses as part of their high school experience. W.H.S. signed on to a consortium of United States and International schools allowing our students to participate in a virtual classroom with students from all around the world. Ms. Beth Hughes taught one online course in literature and acted as the Site Coordinator for courses taught by certified teachers throughout the region.

Social Studies Department Coordinator, Rich Metropolis, secured a Teaching American History Grant entitled History Connected. This grant program allowed for history teachers to participate in intensive, on-going professional development, drawing connections across time and place to the enduring themes and issues of American History and their global connections.

On September 12, the Warrior Marching Band held a collection for the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry. With the help of a Wakefield Boy Scout troop, over 900 items were delivered to the food pantry for distribution.

Mrs. Regina Levine was awarded the Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year award from the Massachusetts Association of Biology Teachers. The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) is an American-based scholarly society that empowers educators to provide the best possible biology and lite science education for all students. Earlier In the year, WHS alumnus and MIT student Michael Salvato named Levine for the MIT Inspirational Teacher Award. The Award recognizes outstanding secondary school teachers who inspire in their students a love of learning, encourage them to pursue excellence, and give them the skills and enthusiasm.

The 4th annual Job Shadow Day was held on Wednesday, March 2- 2010. English teacher Nannette Farrell gave the Key Note speech aboi. different career paths.The day is designed to give juniors a chance t "shadow" an adult at work for a portion of the day to experience what specific job entails. More than 60 WHS students took advantage of th unique opportunity to learn a little about the "real world" in a variety i professions.

Look who is in the News

Senior Leanne Goodwin attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. The NYLC gives high- achieving students a greater understanding of their roles in democracy and responsibilities of leadership.

Shayna Scott and Rebecca Yarvitz were cm mated by the Social Studies Apartment to represent W.H.S. as James l is Scholars.

W.H.S. senior Katie Reiser was featured on Channel 5's A+ Student Award show aired on January 18. Katie was nominated for this award for her resilience in overcoming significant life challenges. Channel 5 visited W.H.S. on January 6 to nterview Katie, her parents and several teachers. Katie was filmed giving a Diversity Leader presentation as well.

At a September School Committee meeting, seniors Steven Parad and Rex Lam, were presented the Superintendent's Award for Excellence. Rex Lam was also nominated as a National Merit finalist based on his outstanding PSAT scores. Steven Parad completed 500 hours of volunteer service during this calendar year, qualifying him to receive the Presidential Gold Volunteer Service Award. The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation recognizes and honors volunteers who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment in service of their communities.

Senior Cameron Mitchell broke the Wakefield High School track record in the 55 meter hurdles last Wednesday night at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Cameron's time was 7.76, breaking the old 55m hurdle record of 8.01. This is the fastest time by a Wakefield hurdler in 44 years!

Hundreds of local residents and downtown shoppers cast ballots for their favorite window design from among the 22 downtown businesses that were decorated for the holidays by W.H.S. Art students as part of the annual Wakefield Chamber of Commerce Holiday Window Painting Contest. After the votes were counted, Foley's Barbershop on Albion Street was declared as the winner. Chamber of Commerce President Suzanne Bowering, barber Adam "oley, and Chamber Treasurer Joyce Grasso presented gift certificates to Shannon McGavin, April Darcy, Sam Conway, Wes Brown, Sonja Bergeron and Garrett Hancock. The creative displays were designed and painted by W.H.S. art and video students under the direction of W.H.S. art teachers Joy Schilling and Deb Batt.

Tom Dorney, Chris Galli, Dayna McCoubrey, Maureen Quirk and Sasha Bodnaruk, student bankers for the WHS branch of The Savings Bank, spent January 27 - 28 in New York City visiting the Museum of American Finance and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. On March 10, they participated in the Massachusetts State Life Smarts Competition after qualifying in an online competition. And on April 9, the students participated in the Massachusetts School Bank Association Spring Conference at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The focus of this year's conference was money management for young adults. Our W.H.S. students had the opportunity to compete in banking, marketing, product development contests and to participate in the New England Economic Adventure Program.

Athletic Director Mike Boyages was selected as the recipient of the MSSADA Theodore Damko Award. This award is presented annually to an athletic administrator who has exemplified the highest standards of the profession and who has made significant contributions to the school and community. Congratulations to Mike on this prestigious and well-deserved honor!

Senior football player Sam Frey was awarded the Henry J. Smith Courage Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston on March 7. Sam's courageous journey from a devastating injury during his freshmen year to his outstanding senior season led to his worthy selection for this prestigious award. Sam's perseverance and courage has been an inspiration to all of us. j-

Three DECA Students qualified to attend the Mass DECA Career Development Conference on March 4-6 at the Marriott Copley Hotel in Boston. Kristen D'Alelio and Charlie Doyle placed 2nd in the Buying and Merchandising Team Event and Aous Estowani placed 3rd in Quick Serve Restaurant Management Individual Event.

The Friends of Lake Quannapowitt recognized outstanding W.H.S. Science students for their service to their community at the annual Service Award Ceremony Breakfast on November 22. Dr. Kim Smith, Margaret Coppe, and members of the FOLQ were on hand to honor Liz Tan, Francesca McCaffrey, David Acodes, and Robert Wensley for their contributions to Lake Quannapowitt water testing.

The WHS Fabulous Faculty team captained by Bill Hoover and the rest of his team Rich Metropolis, Bridget Reed, and Pat Brennan captured 6th place at the 18th Annual Trivia Team Challenge hosted by Noel Bailey. The proceeds from this event go to fund scholarships that CSF award in June to deserving residents of Wakefield to help further their college educations. WHSTV students were on hand to record the entire evening's events.

The Diversity Council Leaders sponsored "Diversity Week" December 14-18. The Diversity Leaders consists of 20 juniors and seniors whose mission is to increase our school's awareness of diversity, and to work to eliminate prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping.

Coach Jerry DoVale, Chris Mogni, Mike Arrangio, Brendon Perry, and Coach Ross Ickes went to the State Wrestling Tournament in Cohassett in February. Mike Arangio won the Division III State Wrestling title in his weight class 112 lbs. He is the first wrestler from Wakefield to win the state title. Congratulaions also go to Brendon Perry who finished third at 135 lbs. and Chris Mogni who finished fifth at 103 lbs.

The Crystal Community Club presented a donation to Wakefield High's Social Awareness Club and the Chris Rollins "Ribbons for Rollins" fund. Donations were given in memory of Christopher Rollins, a member of W.H.S. Class of 2008, to a Wakefield family in need and to the Haiti relief effort. The Social Awareness Club spokesman said, "it is grateful for the generosity shown by the Wakefield public school students, staff, and the communtiy at large." Rob DiNanno, Ashleigh Vargas, and Erin McNulty greeted W.H.S. students and faculty every day with the morning announcements.

Sarah DITonno finished 3rd in the shot put at the Division 3 Class Meet with a throw of 34' 61/2".

Rachel Wong finished 3rd in the high jump at the Division 3 Class Meet with a jump of 5'2".

As part of Wakefield Educational Foundation's (WEF) mini-grant program, WHS Science Department Leader Margaret Coppe received funding to purchase 25 Prometheon Clickers. Used in conjunction with a LCD projector, teachers can assign full quizzes of varying difficulty and students have the opportunity to register answers at their own pace. Teachers know immediately what percentage of the class is answering accurately and can alter the assignments to challenge learners.

Congratulations to Meghan Papagno for her selection to the Boston Herald All- Scholastic Girls' Hockey Team and to Shannon Cronin who was selected to the Boston Herald "Dream Team" as well as the Boston Globe All-Scholastic Girls' Hockey Team. WHS is proud of our outstanding ice hockey players!

The WHS Science Olympiad team came in 17th out of a field of 40 at their competition on Saturday, March 20 at Framingham State College. The High School Jazz Ensemble on February 11, earned an overall score of four stars and a Silver Medal at the MAJE. Their impressive show included "Big Swing Face," "Still Crazy After All These Years" and "Gumbo Street." On March 2, at the MAJE Northeast District Festival the Jazz Ensemble was awarded a Gold Medal to qualify them for the Massachusetts State Finals. The following students were recognized for theirr outstanding musicianship: Rob Taylor, Alto Saxophone, Liz Sullivan, Bass, and Garret Healey, Piano. The WHS Jazz Ensemble took First Place at the Berklee Jazz Festival on Saturday March 13 at the Hynes Convention Center. The bands are split into five divisions based on school size, and the competition begins early in the morning at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston and runs all day, with esteemed professional jazz musicians judging the performances. Chris Czarnota, Nick Gorton and Kevin ampton attended the Middlesex League Shootout at Mount Hood Country ub. Chris Czarnota qualified for the State Tournament and was selected on e All-League Team. The season was a very positive one in the standpoint of terest, dedication, and commitment on a dally basis.

The WHS Varsity Football Team had an outstanding 2009 season. The team won their last five games of the season and were crowned Middlesex League Small School Champions. The Warriors clinched the title by defeating their rival, Melrose, on Thanksgiving Day by a score of 14-13.

Junior Mike Arrangio won the Division 3 State Wrestling tournament at 112 lbs., Junior Brendon Perry finished 3rd at 135 lbs., and Senior Captain /hris Mogni finished 5th at 103 lbs. The Warriors finished 3rd in Division 3 North as a team led [y Senior Captains Chris Mongi, Eric Silvesth, Matt Manfredi, and Pat Farrell. Chris Mongi [nds his career with 62 wins placing him in the Top 25 Career Win Leaders.

Sarah DiTonno, Rachel Wong and Jessica Duffy made the Middlesex League All Star team. The shot put relay team, comprised of DiTonno, Duffy and Kayleigh Jordan, finishes first and the High Jump Team, comprised of Wong, Sarah Ingersoll and Kayla Milburn, placed fifth in the Division 3 Relays. The win against Winchester was decided by the 4x4 Relay Team comprised of Leanne Goodwin, Michelle Salvati, Charnele Bourque and Wong. DiTonno placed third in shot put and Wong placed third in the high jump at the Division 3 Class Meet.

The boys' basketball season was one to be remembered. The team posted 1 1 wins during the egular season, which qualified them for post-season play, as they were ranked 13th in Division 2-North. Unfortunately, the post-season ended abruptly when Chelsea defeated the A/arriors. Highlights included twin victories over arch-rival Melrose and a come-from-behind /ictory over 2nd place Reading at home, Junior Anthony Fabiano was an All-League selection :y the league coaches and senior Shane Taylor and junior Dan Looney were All-Stars. The oyal and vocal support of the student body was outstanding and was much-appreciated by he players and coaches alike.

Citizens' Scholarship Foundation (CSF) of Wakefield is a non-profit community organization that helps Wakefield students meet the costs of higher education by awarding need-based scholarships. The WHS Diversity Council Leaders are a group of juniors and seniors who are trained peer educators. Diversity Leaders facilitate monthly activities in freshman classrooms in addition to coordinating schoolwide activities. The goal of the program is to reduce prejudice and stereotyping, promote respect for all students, and increa.se the appreciation of racial, ethnic, cultural, physical, and intellectual differences.

Dedication ...

Mr. Cucchi was hired in 1980 and has worked with students in the Culinary Classes ever since. Mr Cucchi and his students serve lunch at the Farm Street Cafe three days a week and cater numerous events. Through the years, Mr Cucchi has successfully prepared students for entry level positions in the food service industry as well as post-secondary education in the Culinary Arts field. Tony was also advisor to the Culinary Club. His caring and dedication to his students will be missed by both students and faculty members. Thank you Mr Cucchi for 30 years of dedicated service.

Mrs. Coppe was hired in 1986 and has worked with students in the Science Department teaching Freshman Science, Biology, Astronomy and Oceanography. Mrs. Coppe was appointed in 2004 as the Science Department Coordinator. She has been advisor to the Science Club and the Intellectual Gaming Society as well as the Science Olympiad Team. Margaret's endless energy and love for teaching will be missed by students and faculty. Thank you Mrs. Coppe for 24 years of dedicated service.
